Kickboard

Kickboard

Ceramic tiles, wood, foam board, aircraft cable

Linsi Yang

An ongoing project, installed in the South China Sea bordering the artist’s hometown of Hong Kong, Chicago’s Lake Michigan, and now the Venetian Lagoon, Yang’s Kickboard studies the interaction between water and the materials of the cities that depend on it. Water’s transience is contested in different ways as the boards rust, carry salt, and mold during the lifespan of the piece. Yang views these not as wet nuisances but the memories of an aquatic life, the footsteps of these cities’ essences. As the water runs higher, in Venice and around the world, these material realities become conditions of life demanding to be grappled with.
