Minerva Overlooking Venice

Minerva Overlooking Venice

Ink, charcoal, conte pencil on paper

Scott Kuffner

Minerva — Roman goddess of wisdom, sponsor of arts and trade — both turns away from and turns toward the viewer. Her gestural ambiguity is echoed in the landscape; a version of Venice that defies logic. This refusal of mutual understanding isolates the viewer, encouraging reflection upon one's relationship to the city of water.
